Message from the Chair

It has been a busy start to the year for Education and Training and we are delighted that so many of our members are getting involved with their local schools, colleges and universities. This gives employers a fantastic opportunity to help influence the career choices, skills and knowledge of the next generation. At a time when youth unemployment is high, it is vital that our sector continues to promote itself as one that offers great career prospects and provides real opportunities for young people.

This is one reason why we are so pleased to launch the ITT Apprenticeship of the Year Award sponsored by Training for Travel that helps recognise young adults who are at the beginning of their career and already making a positive impact!

In this tuITTion we will be highlighting some of the amazing work going on in Higher Education as well as upcoming events where you will be able to engage and learn more about some of the latest initiatives and research. Please let us know your stories and how you are getting involved!!!

The GTTP Photo competition for 2012 has recently closed (but there is still time to enter all our other awards!). From the look of the entries, the students have really thought about their local areas and the images that they feel capture the tourist angle and will encourage people to visit. At a time when we are celebrating Great Britain, competitions such as those offered by the GTTP really help young people think about the impact that tourism has on them locally as well as globally.

As always you can find further information on all our initiatives by visiting the ITT Website.

Bournemouth University Stand

Plans are underway for this year’s Future You at World Travel Market – the leading student conference for Travel and Tourism. WTM has always been a great opportunity for students to experience the breadth of our sector first hand and Future You is a large part of the students’ agenda at the event.

The growing importance of WTM to students was recognised last year by the School of Tourism at Bournemouth University. The School has always seen the event as an important platform to discuss cutting edge industry developments and trends, as well as a tool for making essential links and forming partnerships. However, 2011 marked the first year that the School participated as a stand-holder, rather than simply having students attend the event. ng the four days of WTM, the stand was a hub of activity and attracted positive attention from a variety of organisations and individuals from across the sector.

Following this success Fiona Jeffery OBE, WTM Chairman and ITT Fellow, was invited to join a day of lectures, seminars and discussions at Bournemouth University which included well known personalities such as Michel Roux Jr. Fiona took this opportunity to provide a unique insight into her career and charity work. The event formed part of a high profile series of events that the School of Tourism organises each year and they will be returning to WTM as part of their 2012/13 series to help emphasise the role of higher education within the sector

If you would like to hear more about how you could get involved in Future You and WTM, please email training@itt.co.uk.
