One of the things I have been discussing with fellow academics and practitioner members of ITT for some time is the possibility of developing what we might call an ‘ITT MBA’ in travel. Though validated and delivered by one or more university, it would be novel in two ways: (a) by using the skills, knowledge and experience of senior figures in the industry to help deliver the programme and (b) would examine business and management issues exclusively in the context of travel. Delivery would probably be by a combination of distance learning and short intensive study periods e.g. over a weekend. Payment would probably be on a module-by-module basis.

Perhaps predictably, reactions have been mixed. Many academics are sceptical about working on provision for a sector that has historically not invested heavily in professional development. Some senior colleagues in the Institute see it as entering a crowded market with an offer that might equally be satisfied by ‘general’ MBAs. Others are much more enthusiastic, however, suggesting that there is a significant latent demand.

Whether to invest or not in the development of an MBA in travel is, ultimately, a matter for universities. Knowing the views of ITT members would certainly help them make a more informed decision. We have, therefore, included a few questions on a more general membership questionnaire survey that will be distributed soon. Please complete it when you receive your invitation. ITT Committee member John Humphreys, has just returned from a trip to Russia to train teachers to deliver the GTTP Passport to the World Travel and Tourism education programme.

This global curriculum is now taught across Russia to over 200,000 secondary school pupils, and this was John’s fourth visit to train teachers.  This time he conducted two seminars, each of two days – one in Moscow and one in St Petersburg.  There were 28 teachers at the Moscow seminar and 38 in St Petersburg, where there were also lecturers from the hospitality and tourism management faculty of the State Finance University. 

The university lecturers were particularly interested in the work of the ITT, and especially in relation to green and sustainable tourism, which is a totally new concept in their teaching programmes.  John also covered other topics such as heritage tourism, marketing, London 2012 and the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi 2014, as well as a highly well-received session on customer service.  The teachers also appreciated the teaching resources that John had written and had been translated into Russian.

John was instrumental in the development of the GTTP programme in the 1990’s and continues to give his holiday time to support this global initiative.

Message from the Chair

As the debate over the governments tourism strategy continues, one fact that has to be acknowledged is that our sector will continue to create new jobs around the globe. A recent report from the WTTC stated that up to 3million jobs could be created in 2011 alone providing fantastic opportunities and stimulating growth and investment. That is why it is so important that we support educational and training initiatives to ensure that future talent is harnessed and developed at an early age. The GTTP is already working with developing countries to provide a travel and tourism curriculum, supported by other member countries, such as the UK and Ireland.

The work that many of our members do to support education is often not properly acknowledged and the ITT is keen to promote this work and showcase the fantastic examples of employer engagement both here in the UK and abroad. This tuITTion will update you on some of our current success stories but if your organisation would like to share theirs, then please get in touch!!

The Education and Training Committee continue to work hard to develop the ITT’s educational and training initiatives and are delighted that so many of our members are getting involved and supporting us – thank you all!

ITT Graduate - New graduates placed in full time positions within weeks!

ITT Graduate, the free scheme offered in partnership with AA Appointments, is celebrating its recent success with the speedy placement of two graduates with specialist cruise operator, Noble Caledonia. Sally McColgan, Noble Caledonia’s General Manager, contacted the ITT and following a visit to their offices, Debbee Dale, who runs the scheme, quickly got to work to find the best candidates.

“We approached ITT in search of two candidates for future vacancies within the Reservations Administration Department. The process of recruitment went very smoothly. Debbee forwarded only candidates who met our specifications, i.e. had a travel and tourism qualification, good level of knowledge, a passion for travel and were looking to get their foot on the ladder.

They passed our interview process with flying colours and were offered the posts. Our two candidates have now been with us for a couple of weeks, they have both learnt quickly, work hard, show initiative, fit in well with the rest of the team and are proving to be assets to the company. From start to finish Debbee listened to us, understood our needs and met them. The whole process was smooth, painless, worked well all round and is one that we would be happy to repeat next time we have a vacancy.”
