PROPOSAL FOR A NATIONAL SKILLS ACADEMY IN TRAVEL AND TOURISM

ITT is working with People 1st and ABTA to develop a new National Skills Academy for Travel and Tourism. The Government has hinted it may provide funding to help support around 4-5 Academies from different industry sectors. If so, there is likely to be strong competition, with some 20 industry sectors expected to bid for this funding. Please spare just five minutes to complete an online questionnaire which will be used to support a case to government to recognise our sector for a new Academy.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

The People 1st ‘State of the Nation’ research highlights some interesting statistics and analysis of our workforce and the sector. I highly recommend that companies get hold of a copy via www.people1st.co.uk/research. It was great to read that even more employers are investing in the training and development of their staff and that, in general, skills across the sector are improving. This is demonstrated by the growing success of the ATP scheme, which rewards and recognises professional development. ATP has recently welcomed Virgin Holidays to the scheme.

The Tourism Academics and Employers Conference‚ held in collaboration with ABTA and The Tourism Society‚ was a great success. This annual event continues to help us develop stronger relationships between education and industry. The day produced some healthy debate around the topic ‘Overcoming Employment Challenges in Tourism’.

Finally‚ I would like to welcome Danny Waine from Perfect Weddings and Honeymoons to the Education & Training Committee. As the first ever recipient of the ITT Student of the Year Award‚ Danny is a fantastic example of the high standard of industry graduates entering our sector. He’s a great addition to the Committee and I look forward to working with him!

Have a great summer!

WOMEN 1st

people 1st logoThe People 1st State of the Nation report recognised that whilst female workers make up over 70% of the sector’s workforce, they’re hugely under-represented when it comes to senior positions, making up only six per cent of the industry’s board directors.

People 1st is aiming to change this by offering two free Government-funded learning programmes for women. Individual employees won’t be the only ones to benefit as employers will also benefit from the creation of a highly skilled and highly performing workforce.
